Questions you may have.

How long is a session and how often will I see you?

Sessions are typically 50 minutes long and are often scheduled bi-weekly. Bi-weekly sessions will help keep clients accountable and motivated to work on the goals set in counseling. As therapy progresses, we can determined if and when monthly session are appropriate. Many clients  find as they progress with therapy fewer sessions are needed. Frequency of sessions can always be adjusted  to best meet the needs of the client.

How long will therapy last?

Each client comes to counseling presenting with a specific and unique situation or need. Therefore the length of treatment can vary. On average clients will have 5-20 sessions, but it is always up to the client how long they participate in counseling. I have had some clients attend therapy from three months all the way up to two years.

What can I expect during a therapy session?

Therapy sessions are 50 minutes and will focus on you and your needs. Our first session will give me the chance to get you know you and your situation. Together we will set goals for therapy as well as way to monitor these goals. At times you will be asked to complete assignments outside of the therapy session to help address problems and issues more thoroughly.

Confidentiality

In general, the law protects the confidentiality of all communications between a client and psychotherapist. No information is disclosed without prior written permission from the client.

However, there are some exceptions required by law to this rule. These exceptions include:

  • Suspected child abuse or dependent adult or elder abuse. The therapist is required to report this to the appropriate authorities immediately.
  • If a client is threatening serious bodily harm to another person. The therapist is required to notify the police.
  • If a client intends to harm himself or herself. The therapist will make every effort to work with the individual to ensure their safety. However, if an individual does not cooperate, additional measures may need to be taken.
  • By using insurance, the client allows their insurance company to access confidential information. This is the only way insurance will pay for sessions.
